Universite D'agriculture de Technologie et D'education de Kibungo
Kibungo, Rwanda
About Universite D’Agriculture, De Technologie et D’Educations De Kibungo (UNATEK) UNATEK is a community college established as an initiative by students from Kibungo who were attending the National University of Rwanda and felt that Kibungo would benefit from a post-secondary institution. With a lot of hard work and commitment, UNATEK officially opened in 2004 as a full functioning university. UNATEK aims to make Kibungo region self-sufficient in agriculture and technology and to provide employment opportunities to students trained at the university. No War Zone in Rwanda Based at UNATEK, the NWZ project in Rwanda builds on youth’s commitment to change and aims to support young men and women in taking action in their communities. 200 participants were selected that include college, high school and primary school students, and represent Rwanda’s three main ethnic groups: Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. The project makes specific efforts to ensure that participants reflect a wide range of backgrounds, including retired combatants, youth with disabilities, and females. Four categories of skills building workshops are offered: conflict resolution and peacebuilding, leadership development and reconstruction, information technology and human rights and social responsibility. Through Radio Izuba, a community radio station, youth are developing broadcast programs on reconciliation and peacebuilding, as well as public education campaigns on HIV/AIDS, malaria and other public health issues. These programs will help youth contribute to a concept to nation building and reflect on how Rwanda can turn past and present challenges into future opportunities as well as providing youth the adequate tools to engage in their community’s development. As participants of NWZ, youth will gain the tools necessary to train other youth in leadership, information and communication technology, human rights and responsibilities and reconciliation and reconstruction skills, ensuring that the effects of No War Zone are felt throughout the community.
