Conflict resolution involves both decision-making and problem-solving techniques to handle, manage, settle or resolve conflict situations. It is important to understand the needs of all parties involved in order to try to come up with a reasonable and fair solution to the conflict.

Peace-building has become an area of major concern for the international community as well as the need to resolve conflicts peacefully. Through communication and compromise, the international community is trying to reduce the amount of violence and fighting both between countries, as well as within. The idea of using compromise and peaceful agreements to settle internal conflicts has received a lot of support from experts in the field of peace-building.

Conflict resolution has a goal of fulfilling the wishes of all parties, but to what extent this happens depends upon the type of dispute. Conflicts can range from mild disagreements to serious disputes, to deep-rooted clashes, to violent fighting. The intensity of the conflict, combined with the reasons for its existence often make coming to an agreeable solution difficult. Adding to the difficulty of resolving conflict situations are the cultural differences that sometimes exist between the various parties. Cultural differences can lead to misunderstandings which, in turn, may make disagreements harder to resolve.

When conflicts become hard to resolve, third-party mediators or “outsiders”, will often be called in to help. Mediators, like the United Nations, help all parties with the ability to communicate with one another and to come up with a creative solution.
