Working in a Team

1) Definition:

A team is a group of people organized to work together.

2) Nature of a Team:

A team…

  • Has a specific goal.
  • Shares responsibility.
  • Is respectful of one another.
  • Is supportive of one another.
  • Collaborates on all tasks.
  • Creates a trusting environment.

3) How to Organize a Team:
Once you have a team goal(s), the next step is to organize! Organization for any team is key to ensuring a successful outcome and an enjoyable experience for everyone. Being organized can make the difference between realizing your goal(s) and having them left unfulfilled.

  1. Decide how many team members are needed and what types of skills
    they should have.
  2. Arrange a meeting with the whole team.
  3. At the meeting, work together as a team to decide on a strategy:
    • Identify your project goal.
    • Figure out how the goal will be achieved.
    • Create a timeline for when things are going to get done.
    • Decide who is going to do what.
    • Arrange how often meetings are to be held.
  4. Follow through on all aspects of the project to make sure that everything is accomplished successfully.

4) Team Building:

Team building makes it possible for a group of people to reach their collective goal(s), by strengthening the relationship between each team member.

One of the main aims of team building is to get to know one another. Learning about each other is important, because it is what is going to help build the trusting and supportive environment needed to spark good ideas and ways of attaining the team’s goals.

To help your group get to know one another and feel like a team try …

Creating a team identity Choose a catchy team name, a team mascot or design a team logo—use your imagination!
Games Play group games with your team to get them in the cooperative spirit. Games can be found on the Internet or in team building books.
Messaging Systems There are lots of ways to keep in touch with your team electronically; you can send e-mailsor instant message one another.

If you are member of No War Zone, then you can use the messaging centre, which can be accessed through your individual portfolio to make sure that all team members are kept up-to-date.

Lastly, be creative! Try sending fun e-mail attachments like personality tests, jokes or brainteasers to get to learn more about each other.
Newsletters Whether sent by snail-mail or by e-mail, the whole team can contribute to a newsletter.


5) Lastly, Keep Everyone Informed:


It is important to remember that the more members of a team are kept informed
and up-to-date about all team activities, the more-likely they are to successfully
achieve their common goal(s). Sending out updates or having regular meetings
can increase the feeling of unity within a team and work to ensure that all
members feel as though their contributions are valuable and necessary.
